When in doubt, do it: you're not making any permanent changes, you're just adding a new version. But remember that, while it's easier as an editor to ask forgiveness than permission, it's also easier for a creator to revert than argue. So the more substantive your changes are, and the more you want them to stick, the more likely it is that you should bring it up on the game's discussion page.
